I Haven’t Always Got It Right

March 01, 20261 min read

When I talk about self-care, it’s important I say this clearly:

I have not always been like this.

There have been seasons where I pushed too hard.

Where work came first.

Where the weight of responsibility followed me home.

There are still days that are hard.

Days when you’re exhausted.

Days when the emotions sit heavier than usual.

Days when mindful eating goes out the window and you eat a whole packet of chips… and then still chase it with a block of chocolate.

That’s real.

Caring deeply comes with a cost if you don’t manage it properly.

What’s changed is awareness.

I’ve learned that sustainable leadership requires boundaries. It requires discipline around self-care. It requires recognising when you’re running on empty.

Now I prioritise early morning walks with my dog. They say a dog is man’s best friend — and there’s truth in that. Quiet walks before the world wakes up reset my thinking.

Reformer Pilates helps me build physical strength to match the mental load. Grounding keeps me present. Mindful eating (most of the time) fuels me properly.

And family — my husband, my children, my grandchildren — they are my rock. They remind me that I am more than my role.

Some days are still tough.

But I no longer ignore that.

Self-care isn’t perfection.

It’s course correction.

And the stronger I am, the better I can lead, support participants and guide our team.

Til next time,
